About SPXtoSPY.com
A free browser-based converter for the US index complex — S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, Dow Jones, and Russell 2000 — and the educational content that makes it useful.
What the Tool Does
SPXtoSPY.com converts between three representations of the same underlying market: the cash index, the index-futures contract, and the ETF that tracks the index. Four groups are supported on the homepage:
- S&P 500: SPX ↔ ES ↔ SPY (the original ~10:1 ratio)
- Nasdaq 100: NDX ↔ NQ ↔ QQQ (~38:1)
- Dow Jones: DJI ↔ YM ↔ DIA (~100:1)
- Russell 2000: RUT ↔ RTY ↔ IWM (~10:1)
Type any value in any field and the other two fields fill in automatically using the current ratio. The ratios themselves are calculated server-side from delayed Yahoo Finance quotes and refreshed hourly. Values you type into the converter are processed in your browser — they are never sent to our servers.
Why We Built It
Traders, options students, and curious investors constantly need to translate between these instruments. An SPX level on CNBC needs to become an SPY price in a brokerage account. A pre-market ES print needs to become an estimate of where SPY will open. A QQQ option strike needs to be understood relative to the NDX level that cleared it. Doing that math in your head is harder than it should be, and most "SPX to SPY" calculators on the internet hard-code an outdated 10.0 divisor. We wanted one tool that handled all four index groups with live-calibrated ratios, a consistent UI, and a clear explanation of why the ratio is what it is.
We also wanted the options context handled properly — SPX and SPY options are not interchangeable (cash-settled vs. physical, European vs. American, 1256 tax treatment, different notional size) — so the articles walk through those differences in plain language.

Liquid Amber Partners LLC is an independent operator of a small portfolio of consumer tool sites. We are not a broker-dealer, registered investment adviser, futures commission merchant, or commodity trading advisor. We have no paid relationship with any exchange, index provider, ETF issuer, or brokerage, and we do not accept payment for article placements or editorial direction.
Editorial Approach
Articles are written to help real traders, students, and investors understand the relationships between indices, futures, and ETFs — not to sell you anything. Where we cite a number (an expense ratio, a contract multiplier, a historical ratio), we try to pull it from a primary source (the ETF prospectus, the CME contract specs, the index methodology document) and link where practical. Articles are updated when specifications or market structure change.
Articles may link to books on investing, trading, and market history through the Amazon Associates program — see our Affiliate & Financial Disclosure and Privacy Policy. Affiliate revenue helps keep the converter free for everyone. Product recommendations are selected on the basis of technical relevance to the article topic, not the size of the commission.
How the Site Is Funded
SPXtoSPY.com is funded through two sources: (1) display advertising served by Google AdSense, and (2) affiliate commissions from Amazon Associates and similar programs. We do not sell your personal information. See our Privacy Policy for detail on advertising cookies and opt-out options.
What the Site Is Not
SPXtoSPY.com is not a trading platform, a live quote feed, a signal service, or a replacement for professional financial advice. The converter produces approximations based on ratios derived from delayed market data — not live quotes — and must not be used for order entry or real-money trading decisions. See our Terms of Use for the full "Not Investment Advice" disclaimer.
